I feel like a million bucks when my kitchen table is clean.
Weird…I know.
And not clean in the crumb-free or no dirty dishes sort of way. My kitchen table is a catch-all for my mail, half empty bottles of water and loose change. It’s literally an “everything but the kitchen sink” type space — pun intended.
I have no idea why I find it alright to create/leave a mess, but when I declutter and put everything in its proper place (usually on a Sunday morning), I feel like my life is completely in order. I could be donning messy hair and ratty pajamas, but if that table is clean, I will glide through the next few hours like Princess Jasmine on a flying carpet.
But when it’s a mess, I’m at a low. I come home from work utterly overwhelmed by the sight of multiple Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons. “I’ll get to it Sunday” I think as I temporarily relocate my pretty potted peace lily centerpiece to make extra room. I sort what I can and move on.
I may have accomplished everything on my to-do list for work and the rest of my house may be clean, but I let that kitchen table determine my self-worth daily. Again, weird…I know.
Then I go to bed and do it all over again.
Organization has been a struggle of mine my entire life. I’m a creative person and clutter creeps up on us creative folks quickly.
So as we welcome 2021, what are my resolutions? Not letting a pesky tabletop determine my self-worth and also being more organized (which has been a resolution of mine since the 1990s).
Old habits die hard.
